Please note that this software is mostly unsupported at this time. There are many scripts that you can use on OSX that can do as good a job as this program while running in the background. Source code free to a good home, if you're interested please drop me an email.
This is a Macintosh client for several of the free dynamic dns service providers. These services allow your Mac to have a dns name like mycoolmac.dyndns.org that always points to your Macintosh even if you have a connection that does not get a static IP address. You must have an account with one of the supported services before this client can do anything useful for you.
This client currently has plugins for the following services:
UPDATE: 7/4/2002. Though it's been a very long time since this has been updated I am finally back to work on it. I'll be releasing the next version along with the source code very soon. Until then, if you wish to write a plugin for a new service you can download the Plugin Format Document version 1 for a description of the settings and how to create a new one. Questions or problems let me know. Thanks!
UPDATE: There are now plugins available for Zone Edit and also Easy DNS. You can install these plugins by downloading one of these plugin installers for your system type. You must already have the program installed before installing these.
The client has a setup assistant that will walk you through configuring your client to work with your chosen service. Each service supports a slightly different feature set, so make sure you register with one that has what you need. Or register with all of them! This client will support an unlimited number of accounts.
This software comes in 2 parts. A faceless background application that your Mac will treat as an extension, and a control panel that serves as it's interface. This is an improvement over previous versions of the program where you had to have the status window open all the time. This way the program will only open the interface if it needs to alert you to a problem.
New in this version is a schedule that you can set the times when you want your account to be updated in 15 minute intervals during the week. There is an applescript hook for on and off schedule events so that you can activate and deactivate services on your computer while it is actively updating. This is useful if you are on a metered line or if you dont want your line to be kept up during peak charge hours. You can set a 'tickle' of the internet connection to keep it up between IP checks even if no other traffic is currently happening. As the previous version this client works for simple connections as well as connections through a hardware NAT router or software router like IPNetRouter or Vicoms Internet Gateway. Also new in this version is some simple scriptablility. You can get the current IP of your machine or turn the client on and off under applescript control. Please see the documentation for a full description of it's features.
YES, it will work with Airport! You need to configure NAT on your airport, but this is not complicated, please check your airport docs for the details. In order to resolve this remote address the service must support the 'use router/gateway address' in the address resolution page of the setup assistant. If your currently selected service does not support this the choice will be greyed out. Currently DynDNS and No-IP do support this.
This client is released as freeware. This is beta level software, there may yet be bugs and problems. Please see the beta readme document for the already known issues. This client is currently available for 68k, PowerPC Macs and a Carbon version is also available for MacOSX.
